Marble

Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of re-crystallized carbonate minerals mostly calcite (limestone) or dolomite. Pure white marble comes about as a result of metamorphism of a very pure limestone or dolomite protolith. The swirls and veins of many coloured marbles are usually due to the many impurities they might contain like silt, sand, and iron oxides which were present in the limestone. Green coloration is normally due to serpentine resulting from high magnesium concentration. Marble is used for sculpting or as an industrial source for calcium carbonate.
